Hands-On Filmmakers Workshops

To inspire and educate burgeoning image makers young or not so young, we offer a series of hands-on technical workshops. Each will be taught by working pros and focused on aspects of lighting, gaffing, gripping, makeup, or location audio recording. Practical as well as artistic concerns are discussed and demonstrated here in our comfortable studio.

We keep each session limited to no more than 8 participants to give each of you the attention and focus you deserve.

Beginning in Early 2025

Cost per workshop is only $300 for a full day of career-enhancing education and experience. There will be free coffee, and a break mid-day when you can refuel at the Food Cart pod just a block away.

Discounts for multiple sessions too!

What you’ll learn

  • LIGHTING WORKSHOP A - Interviews

    MARCH 1, 2025

How do you create beautiful lighting in a crappy windowless office? Award winning D.P. Gary Nolton will screen some examples from his body of corporate work and breakdown the challenges of each.

Then we’ll emulate settings typical to interview situations and how to best light them by actually doing so. We will discuss options of small flexible lighting packages, lens choice and even audio concerns.

We’ll also cover using Green Screen as a background, which is not uncommon in interview assignments.

  • LIGHTING WORKSHOP B - Narrative Film and Scene work

    MARCH 8, 2025

What’s the best way to cover a dramatic scene and light each composition efficiently? Award winning D.P. Gary Nolton will screen some examples from his body of short film work and breakdown the challenges of each.

Then we’ll get to work blocking, lighting and filming a dramatic scene using actual actors. The discussion will include lighting a scene as a Day Interior, and a Night Interior and how to accomplish each regardless of actual time of day as this is often required.

Emphasis is on story and supporting the emotional tone of scenes, while creating a consistent look.

  • LIGHTING WORKSHOP C -Tabletop Product and Food

    MARCH 15, 2025

How do you bring out the best in inanimate objects? Award winning D.P. Gary Nolton will screen some examples from his body of tabletop work and breakdown the challenges each presented and how they were solved. We’ll discuss work with food as well.

Then we’ll split into 2 person teams who each will have a tabletop set up and products to light, reviewing the look on HD monitors, and making still photos to take home for reference.

Curious about the mysterious world of location sound? The Sound Mixer’s primary responsibility is capturing clean dialog recordings, but the position often encompasses a world of other nuances and technical challenges. Expert audio recordist Jesse Nordhausen will go over basic audio equipment (mixers/recorders, booms, wireless lavaliers, timecode), as well as overall on-set workflows, interactions with other departments, and how the job can vary dependent on the type of production. Hands on practice with the biggest sound witchcraft of all, hiding lavalier microphones for clear dialog with minimal clothing noise.
